Fostering a creative work environment in my office

I just published my first book! Well, it’s a family cookbook, but that still counts.

The theme is “surfaces.” As I was going through all these old family recipe cards and photos, I noticed the physical media had a lot of character to it: tattered edges, food stains, etc. I decided that going through the cookbook should be the same experience as if you had the cards splayed out in front of you on the kitchen counter as you prepare to cook. I did the layout and compositing work in Adobe InDesign and used Adobe Photoshop to key out backgrounds around the edges of scanned media and touch up recipes for legibility.

This is a costume I started for Bunnarchy, an Easter-themed pub crawl.

It’s constructed out of foam rubber. The material comes in sheets, so I formed it into 2 sections (base and top) and did some trimming to polish off the edges. As you can see from the sketch, it’s not quite finished. I plan to give it another coat of paint before turning it into a hat for next Easter!

This is a line following Arduino robot I built at Metrix, my local makerspace.

Arduino Robot

It uses an LED to illuminate the ground in front of it, providing a high contrast surface to sense with a photocell. The Arduino uses the data from the sensor to drive the robot so that it will continue to straddle the line.
